9 essential questions when shopping for a new fridge.

1. Installation type: Freestanding vs built-in refrigerator?

Start by deciding which design suits your kitchen: freestanding or built-in. Understanding freestanding vs built-in refrigerator choices helps plan for installation and style. Both have benefits:

  • Freestanding: Slides into your kitchen cutout for straightforward installation and flexible placement — ideal if you might move or remodel later.
  • Built-in: Delivers a flush, integrated look with cabinetry and can accept custom panels for a seamless aesthetic.

Tip: Review freestanding vs built-in refrigerator options alongside cabinet dimensions, ventilation, and electrical/water connections.

2. Which fridge size and depth fits my kitchen?

Next, confirm size. Ask: what size refrigerator do I need and how do I measure for a new refrigerator? Measure the cutout (width, height, and depth), account for door swing, and leave at least 1 inch of ventilation clearance at the sides/top/back unless specified otherwise.

  • Counter-depth: sits nearly flush with countertops for a built-in look with easier traffic flow.
  • Standard depth: offers more capacity and extends past your countertops.

Pro tip: Common freestanding refrigerator sizes include heights of 69–72 inches and widths from 24 inches (compact) to 36 inches. For small kitchens, our 24 inch models maximize utility.

3. Door Configuration: French door vs. Bottom Freezer?

French door models keep fresh items at eye level and are great for Large Capacity Refrigerators. Bottom freezer designs suit smaller households and simplify access to everyday foods.

4. Ice and Water: External, internal, or no dispenser?

Decide how you want water and ice. Many households enjoy an external ice and water dispenser for convenience. Our QuickIce Pro System™ delivers freshly filtered ice quickly—up to 12 lbs. per day* for up to 40 glasses*. If you want a streamlined look and maximum door storage, consider a refrigerator without a dispenser.

5. Refrigerator Capacity – what capacity refrigerator do I need?

Plan approximately 4–6 cubic feet per adult, adding more if you meal prep, shop in bulk, or prefer large capacity refrigerators for entertaining. Standard depth units often provide greater capacity than counter-depth. Families appreciate the wide shelves and easy accessibility of French door refrigerators, while Bosch’s compact bottom freezer can easily accommodate the needs a smaller household.

6. Color: Selecting the best color and finish

Choose a finish that complements your kitchen and lifestyle, from timeless stainless steel to bold black stainless steel.

  • Stainless steel: anti-fingerprint, classic and versatile.
  • Black Stainless Steel: striking matte finish, and helps guard against scratches and fingerprints.
  • Custom Panel: panel-ready built-ins blend seamlessly with cabinetry.

7. Energy efficiency

Your refrigerator runs all day, every day. Bosch refrigerators run as quiet as our dishwashers, at 40 dBa, and are all Energy Star Certified, helping to reduce electricity use and operating costs. Energy Star Certified refrigerators meet strict EPA requirements, promoting long-term savings without compromising performance.

8. Layout, Shelving & Key Features

Think about your typical grocery list — this guides interior configuration. Bosch refrigerators have adjustable shelves, wide door bins, and specialty drawers that match your routine.

  • Fruits and vegetables: Humidity-controlled produce drawers help keep items crisp.
  • Fresh fish and meat: A dedicated chiller drawer maintains cooler temperatures for proteins.
  • Milk and gallons: Wide gallon door bins free up shelf space.
  • Convenience features: frost-free designs reduce manual defrosting. A refrigerator with reversible door offers flexible hinge placement for apartments or galley kitchens. Models without a dispenser maximize interior and door bin space and present a minimalist exterior.
